Do you remember going swimming at night as a kid or a teenager? It’s preposterous to think that anything could happen to you while you were in the pool, you’d have to see it jump in. Well, for those out there that always had that fear in the back of their mind, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures presents Night Swim. The movie is based on the 2014 short film by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire.

It stars Wyatt Russell as Ray Waller, a retired baseball player with a degenerative illness, who moves into a new home with his concerned wife Eve (played by Kerry Condon). Alongside them are their kids Izzy (Amelie Hoeferle) and Elliot (Gavin Warren). Secretly hoping, against the odds, to return to pro ball, Ray persuades Eve that the new home’s shimmering backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home’s past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of inescapable terror.

Night Swim is written and directed by Bryce McGuire and produced by James Wan and Jason Blum.

For such a simple idea, just from the trailer, Night Swim looks terrifying. It’s that primal fear of being in any body of water by yourself, but also the supernatural aspect of it. What if the monster isn’t a physical thing? A shark is one thing, ghosts are a whole different ballgame.

We’ll have to see when it releases in theaters on January 5th, 2024.
