Back in 2019 when Netflix dropped The Witcher, I do not think they realized the gold mine they created. Yes, starring someone like Henry Cavill always helps, but the Witcher provided more. Not only did they create a new series in a genre struggling to find shows that last, but they found a universe with infinite possibilities to tell more tales. We may need to wait until December 17th for the Cavill version to return, but Netflix just dropped a trailer for their animated tale The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. Check it out.
For those unfamiliar with this upcoming adaptation the summary reads as follows:
“The world of The Witcher expands in this anime origin story: Before Geralt, there was his mentor Vesemir — a swashbuckling young Witcher who escaped a life of poverty to slay monsters for coin. But when a strange new monster begins terrorizing a politically-fraught kingdom, Vesemir finds himself on a frightening adventure that forces him to confront the demons of his past.”

This new series drops on Netflix August 23rd, so the wait won’t be quite as long. This new series promises to give us a whole new perspective on the life of a Witcher. Where Geralt likes to remain quiet, gruff and aloof, Vesemir looks to be more outgoing, slick, charismatic and as quick with his wit as he is with his sword. I love the line near the end of the trailer when asked if the demon is a friend, Vesemir replies “friend of a friend.”
The great thing about Anime is that it allows stories to be told much cheaper than live action version. Game of Thrones could learn a thing or two from this. Nightmare of the Wolf also precedes Geralt’s story as Vesemir is in fact his mentor. How someone like Vesemir created such a sullen, crotchety Witcher such as Geralt remains to be seen. Hopefully, we get a few answers by shows end.
The show will feature the voices of Theo James, Lara Pulver, Graham McTavish and Mary McDonnell. This appears to be a one-shot movie instead of a series. Its run time is listed as 81 minutes, so sadly, no marathoning will be required here.
