It’s never good news when films get shelved or cancelled. The hard work that creators put into these films, sometimes for years, is routinely just thrown away by film studios. DC today, according to The Hollywood Reporter, shelved two of it’s biggest upcoming comic book films. The Trench and New Gods were both put on the shelf.

The Trench is a spinoff from Aquaman, which would have focused on the deadly creatures seen in the film. A horror based comic-book film has yet to be done properly, especially in the DC universe of films. Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald had the script written with James Wan producing.

New Gods was from Ava DuVernay with comic book writer Tom King. Written by comic legend, Jack Kirby, the film focused on the iconic characters like Big Barda and Orion. With Darkseid showing up in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, one could have expected this to be a hot property for DC. DuVernay had this to say about it on Twitter.

Now it looks like DC is going another direction with it’s slate of films. This doesn’t mean that the films are outright cancelled though. In the film business, never say never. They’re going the way of Marvel and building an interconnected slate of films that feed through the films and television series.

Following this, DC’s upcoming schedule includes: James Gunn’s Suicide Squad in August, Black Adam in July 2022, The Flash in November 2022, and Shazam: Fury of the Gods in June, 2023, among other films.

This is disappointing news, but hopefully all the creators and filmmakers involved can go on to other projects and succeed.

So, what do you think of this news about DC’s upcoming slate?
