Diana Rigg has died at the age of 82.
The award-winning actress was known for her TV roles in Game of Thrones and the 60’s spy series The Avengers. She also starred as Tracy Bond in the movie Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Rigg was also a prolific theater actress. Her role in a 1992 production of the Greek tragedy Madea earned her a Tony Award.
“Diana Rigg died peacefully early this morning. She was at home with her family who have asked for privacy at this difficult time. Diana was a much loved and admired member of her profession, a force of nature who loved her work and her fellow actors. She will be greatly missed,” her agent Simon Beresford said.
Rigg’s daughter Rachael Stirling also released a statement. Stirling revealed Rigg died from cancer, diagnosed earlier this year.
“My Beloved Ma died peacefully in her sleep early this morning, at home, surrounded by family. She died of cancer diagnosed in March, and spent her last months joyfully reflecting on her extraordinary life, full of love, laughter and a deep pride in her profession. I will miss her beyond words,” said Stirling.
Diana Rigg’s Career
Rigg enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1955. Afterwards, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and began her career in the theater. Later, she earned her first Tony nomination for the play Abelard and Heloïse.
In 1965, Rigg’s television career took off with the spy series The Avengers. She played Emma Peel for 51 episodes, a role which made her a style icon and sex symbol in England.
Her spy success led to her casting in the sixth James Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Though her character ultimately met an untimely end, she remains the only person to have married 007.
Recently, Rigg appeared in HBO’s Game of Thrones as fan favorite character Olenna Tyrell.
Rigg will appear in Edgar Wright’s upcoming film Last Night in Soho, which should release in April 2021.
