The Pope’s Exorcist captivated audiences with Russel Crowe‘s performance as Father Gabriele Amorth. Now according to Bloody Disgusting, a sequel is in early development. They do expect Crowe to return for the sequel but other than that, they have no concrete details.

The Pope’s Exorcist has made $52 million worldwide so far. Julius Avery directed the film from a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos, Chuck MacLean, Michael Petroni, Chester Hastings, and R. Dean McCreary. The production budget was $18 million, and it’s already made money back for Screen Gems.

Father Gabriele Amorth had a legendary career as a high profile exorcist, so there’s plenty of room for sequels to tell his various stories. His exorcism number is reported to be in the realm of 100,000+.

In The Pope’s Exorcist, “Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican’s leading exorcist, investigates the possession of a child and uncovers a conspiracy the Vatican has tried to keep secret.” It stars Crowe alongisde Franco Nero, Laurel Marsden, Cornell S. John, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney, Alex Essoe, and Daniel Zovatto. Ralph Ineson voices the film’s demon.

Father Gabriele Amorth passed away at the age of 91 in 2016.
