Tomb Raider Update: Amazon Plans ‘Marvel-Like Franchise’ With Movie, Game, and Series

It sure looks like Tomb Raider will be the mega-franchise Amazon has been after.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Amazon Studios has teamed with Dmitri M. Johnson‘s dj2 Entertainment for a rights deal to make a Tomb Raider film. These come in addition to the TV series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge and at least one video game in the Lara Croft franchise.

They’re doing all of this with the intent of building out a connected world of Tomb Raider. All the various media will connect together in a similar way to what Marvel has done with their universe. The game was announced back in December, with additional games coming down the line.

THR’s sources describe it as the second biggest commitment at Amazon behind Lord of the Rings. They spent over $250 million on the rights to Lord of the Rings that cover The Rings Of Power and other spinoffs. While Phoebe Waller-Bridge is writing the series, she’s said to not be involved with the movie or the game. That likely takes her out of the running to play Lara Croft. Johnson’s dj2 Entertainment put together the Tomb Raider anime series at Netflix, which has a two-season order. The dj2 Entertainment deal will look into adapting video-game series into series and movies for Amazon and wider release. They’re currently working on Life Is Strange and Disco Elysium as adaptations.
