The legacy of the Skywalker lightsaber is a long one. Anakin Skywalker’s second lightsaber would survive through the Clone Wars, the era of the Empire, and into the New Republic. From its creation on, Leia Organa would be the only member of the Skywalker family to never wield the weapon. That could change in Star Wars: Episode IX.
Leaks and rumors having been pouring off the Episode IX set. One of the more recent rumors has Leia, finally, igniting the family lightsaber. Supposedly she’ll do so in a scene with Maz Kanata and Leia’s loyal droids, C-3PO and R2-D2. To have Leia both possess and use the lightsaber could provide a proper sendoff for our beloved princess.
Leia to Wield the Skywalker Lightsaber in Episode IX?
In the scene, First Order News tells us, Leia stands with Maz, Threepio and Artoo, a city in ruin in the distance. Based on the physical description of the planet, it could very well be Batuu. (Which would make sense, as it would be a perfect marketing tie in to the Star Wars expansion at Disney theme parks, Galaxy’s Edge.) Leia is said to take a “Jedi stance” and ignite the lightsaber, pointing it towards the ruined city.
Now, this scenario seems unlikely, given the lightsaber once belonging to her father and brother was destroyed in The Last Jedi. However, stranger things have happened in the telling of Star Wars tales. It’s entirely possible that Rey could repair the lightsaber, or even construct a facsimile in honor of her short-timed Jedi Master, Luke. Repaired or new, if the kyber crystal inside came from the Skywalker lightsaber, Leia holding the weapon in a symbolic gesture could be fitting.
Whether this rumor, or any other, for that matter, will ring true come December 20, 2019 remains to be seen. Though most are far-fetched, I wouldn’t mind seeing Leia with a lightsaber. If nothing else, it would make up for the atrocious “Mary Poppins Leia” scene of Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi.
